Okay, real talk,if youāve ever pulled on your favoriteĀ clothes for pole fitness and realized they smell a bit⦠off or feel a little less sticky than last week, you are not alone.
Iāve been dancing for a few years now, and let me tell you,Iāve ruined my fair share of pole sets. From tossing them in with regular laundry to straight-up forgetting them in my gym bag for days (yep, gross), Iāve made almost every mistake when it comes to cleaning pole wear.
But hey, mistakes are how we learn, right?
So grab your coffee (or protein shake), and letās chat about how to actually care for your pole wear without turning it into a complicated science experiment. Iām sharing everything Iāve learned the hard way about pole dancing gear maintenance, so your fav sets can stay grippy, cute, and odor-free.
Lesson #1: The First Wash Matters More Than You Think
Let me set the scene: Iād just gotten this gorgeous neon yellow pole set, like, glows-in-the-dark level neon. I was so excited, I ripped off the tags, wore it straight to class, sweated buckets, and then threw it in the wash with a bunch of dark socks.
Now,unfortunately the dark socks ruin my favorite colour pole wear which was enough to give me a shock.
Lesson learnt the hard way.You need to always give your new pole wear a pre-wash and most importantly wash it separately to prevent its colour.Even better, turn them inside out before washing to protect the surface that gives you that sticky grip on the pole.
Lesson #2: Your Washing Machine Is Not Always Your Friend
Look, I get it,weāre all busy. Iāve been tempted to chuck all my sweaty pole stuff in the machine more times than I can count. But hereās the deal: most clothes for pole fitness are made from materials like spandex, lycra, and specialty blends that just donāt hold up well under rough treatment.
Personally, I hand wash 90% of my pole wear now. I know that sounds a bit much, but honestly, it takes like 10 minutes. I fill up a sink with cold water, drop in a gentle detergent, swish everything around, rinse, and let it air dry. Easy.
When Iām feeling lazy (because we all have those weeks), Iāll use a mesh laundry bag, set my washer to the delicate cycle, and pray to the pole gods. But even then, I skip the spin and never, ever use fabric softener. That stuff is the enemy. It coats the fabric, messes with breathability, and completely kills the stickiness.
Lesson #3: Drying Is an Art
Okay, another confession: I once tumble-dried a pair of velvet pole shorts.
They came out sad. Stretched, limp, and about two shades lighter.
You need to air dry your gear always and then lay it on a towel for drying or hang it but don't hang it directly in the sunlight as it fades the colour faster , especially on the holographic ones and we love that colour.
And if youāre in a hurry? Resist the urge to blast it with a hairdryer. Itās not worth it.
Lesson #4: Store Smart, Not Stuffed
So you know how some people have a cute little drawer for their pole wear? Yeah, thatās not me. Mine used to live in a tangled mess inside an old backpack until I realized that my shorts were losing their shape just from how I stuffed them.
Now, I roll them up neatly and keep them in fabric drawer organizers. It helps keep everything breathable, easy to find, and safe from my cat, who apparently loves chewing on sparkly straps.
Also, please donāt leave your damp gear in your gym bag overnight. Bacteria love that. Itāll turn even your best set into a biohazard.
Lesson #5: Rotate Your Sets Like a Pro
I get it,you have a favorite set. We all have that one top that fits just right or those booty shorts that make you feel like a goddess. But wearing the same outfit every single session wears it out way faster.
I try to rotate between at least 3ā4 sets during the week. It gives the fabric time to rest, recover, and dry out properly between uses. Plus, itās a great excuse to expand your collection (youāre welcome).
Lesson #6: Donāt Ignore the Gross Factor
Letās get real: pole dancing is sweaty work. Youāre rubbing skin on metal, doing floorwork, and probably flipping upside down multiple times in an hour. That sweat builds up in your gear, especially if you love sticky wear or velvet-style fabrics.
If your clothes for pole fitness start to hold a funky smell, even after washing, try soaking them in a vinegar and water mix (1 part white vinegar to 4 parts cold water) for 15ā20 minutes before washing. It helps kill bacteria and deodorize without damaging the fabric.
The longer you wait to wash them ,the longer it will get harder to get rid of the sweat .
Bonus Tip:
When you take care of your polewear and gear means you are going to buy fewer new pieces which makes shopping more sustainable which is going to be great for both the planet and your wallet.
Washing them on time, using air drying, skipping the use of any harmful chemicals makes all the difference for your outfit and you can even use your old set as a cute sleepwear .
Final Thoughts: Treat Your Pole Wear Like a Teammate
Your pole wear works hard to support you, literally. It actually helps you in all your pole dancing moves and let you stretch and slay at the same time so giving it extra care and attention will maintain it for a much longer time and you can keep using it without any hassle.
So if you were not taking care of your pole wear uptill now or tossing it dirty in the bag ,it is completely okay we all have been there..
But from here on out, letās commit to better pole dancing gear maintenance because we deserve gear that looks great and lasts.
